A spokesperson for the L.A. City Attorney’s Office says there is nothing in the law that prohibits someone from refusing to rent to people with or without pets.
The Federal Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, familial status, and disability, but pets are given a pass.
The story says if a pet dies, the apartment building owner takes the owner to the shelter to get a new pet. WHAT If the owner doesn’t want a shelter animal and wants to buy or get one by him/herself, and apartment owner says no, you MUST have a shelter pet, would that be legal???? MAYBE if that clause is written into the contract, then perhaps it could be ok if one agreed to it. We suspect this lady gets all the people to do whatever she says. Like get a shelter pet.
