A Labrador named Bear helped find a thumb drive in the home of Jared Fogle, playing a key role in child porn charges against the former Subway pitchman.

The dog is trained to find electronic components through smell. NBC Newssays Bear is one of five dogs in the nation trained to find electronics, while Discover magazine says he is one of three dogs with such training.

Bear’s training relies on the work of chemist Jack Hubball, who tested flash drives, circuit boards and other electronic components and found a chemical that is common to all of them, according to the Discover story.

Bear has been used in four other investigations, including a probe that resulted in the arrest of an Olympics gymnastic coach, NBC says. A deputy fire chief in Anderson, Indiana, trained Bear and plans to train additional dogs. He recently sold Bear to the Seattle Police Department.

Investigators used Bear as well as a custom-built mobile forensics laboratory during the search of Fogle’s home in suburban Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Star reports. Fogle has agreed to plead guilty to charges that he had sex with minors and received child pornography produced by the former director of his charitable foundation.
